BYU Football Rolls Out ‘The Virgil’ Uniform Combination For Virginia Week

PROVO, Utah – The BYU football team will wear a uniform combination that pays tribute to an era that is sometimes forgotten in BYU history.
BYU will debut “The Virgil” uniform against the Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday, October 30, 2021. The name “Virgil” is derived from former BYU star QB Virgil Carter.
Carter played at BYU from 1963-1966 and was an All-American honorable mention selection in 1966.

During Carter’s time at BYU, the Cougars wore a royal blue helmet with a gray facemask. That combination is coming out this week against Bronco Mendenhall’s Virginia squad.
The rest of “The Virgil” will feature a royal blue uniform with white pants. In addition, BYU dropped a hype video to unveil the combination featuring wide receiver Puka Nacua.

This is the ninth different uniform combination this season for BYU. BYU has a total of 26 different combinations to pull from in their identity of jersey combinations.
Earlier this year, BYU wore a “Royal Rush” uniform combination featuring a royal blue helmet. Until this season, the BYU football team had not donned royal blue helmets since the 1960s.

Both BYU and Virginia come into this week’s game with 6-2 records. BYU defeated Washington State last week on the Palouse, while Virginia comes into Provo on a four-game winning streak.

vs. Arizona (Las Vegas) – Royal Rush (Win, 24-16)
UTAH – Royal blue uniform, white pants, white helmet with royal decal plus 9/11 tribute (Win, 26-17)
ARIZONA STATE – All-white uniform with royal blue accents (Win, 27-17)
USF – Navy blue uniform with a white helmet, white pants (Win, 35-27)
at Utah State – White helmet with royal blue decals and “Giff” facemask, white jersey, royal blue pants (Win, 34-20)
BOISE STATE – All-Navy Blue (Loss, 17-26)
at Baylor – Navy helmet, white jersey, navy pants; Sailor Coug logo on the back of the helmet
at Washington State – All-white uniform with navy blue numbers, stripes, and decals
VIRGINIA – “The Virgil” with royal blue helmet featuring gray facemask; white pants, royal blue jersey
