SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Brighton High School’s upcoming football game against the Murray Spartans has been canceled and the contest was rescheduled against the Jordan Beetdiggers.

The No. 6 ranked Bengals were originally slated to host the Spartans on Friday, October 2.

Now, the Friday night matchup will feature the Jordan Beetdiggers (0-7) and the undefeated Bengals (6-0).

Jordan will host Brighton on Friday, October 2 at 7 p.m. (MDT).

Murray School District confirmed to KSL Sports that the game was canceled due to COVID-19 and 29 Spartan players were quarantined as a result.

The District said that test results confirmed one positive case of the coronavirus disease.

Previously Canceled Games

This is the second canceled contest for Brighton in as many weeks.

Skyline was slated to host Brighton on Friday, September 25.

The game was scratched following an outbreak of the coronavirus disease within the Eagles’ football program. It was not rescheduled against another opponent.

In July, when we approved our return to school plans, our board committed to our communities and teachers that we would abide by the State Health Department guidance and recommendations,” Granite Board of Education president Karyn Winder said in a statement about the Brighton/Skyline cancellation. “We are not inclined to disregard these scientifically based recommendations. Safety for our students, their families, and employees will continue to be paramount above all else.”

Recently, West Jordan and Copper Hills also canceled games because of the coronavirus disease.

Other High School Games

After the state of Utah announced that Provo and Orem would move into an escalation coronavirus risk level, high school football games in both cities were restricted to being played without spectators.

The Granite School District recently announced a two-week dismissal from in-person learning but said that sporting events could continue.

Coronavirus Resources

How Do I Prevent It?

The CDC has some simple recommendations, most of which are the same for preventing other respiratory illnesses or the flu:

  • Avoid close contact with people who may be sick
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. Always wash your hands with soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
The CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

How To Get Help

If you’re worried you may have COVID-19, you can contact the Utah Coronavirus Information Line at 1-800-456-7707 to speak to trained healthcare professionals. You can also use telehealth services through your healthcare providers.

Additional Resources

If you see evidence of PRICE GOUGING, the Utah Attorney General’s Office wants you to report it. Common items in question include toilet paper, water, hand sanitizer, certain household cleaners, and even cold medicine and baby formula. Authorities are asking anyone who sees price gouging to report it to the Utah Division of Consumer Protection at 801-530-6601 or 800-721-7233. The division can also be reached by email at [email protected].
