PROVO, Utah – Former Utah QB Charlie Brewer could add some sizzle to a game on the 2022 BYU football schedule.
BYU opponent Liberty announced on Monday who will get the first crack at quarterback, replacing NFL draft pick Malik Willis. Flames head coach Hugh Freeze named former Utah Utes QB Charlie Brewer as Liberty’s starter.

Brewer was the starting quarterback for the Utes during BYU’s 26-17 victory over Utah on September 11, 2021. The BYU win ended their nine-game losing streak against rival Utah and practically finished Brewer’s time as the starter for the Utes.
BYU will face Liberty in Lynchburg, Virginia, on October 22, 2022. Kick time and tv details have not yet been announced for the all-Independent tilt.
One week after the loss to BYU, Brewer started against San Diego State for Utah and was benched in-game for Cameron Rising. Rising then led Utah to a Pac-12 Championship and a Rose Bowl appearance.
After that loss to San Diego State, Brewer entered the transfer portal and left the Utah program to maintain his collegiate eligibility. Under NCAA rules, FBS players can appear in four games and preserve a redshirt season. Brewer appeared in three games last year for Utah, giving him a redshirt season.
The 2022 season will be Brewer’s sixth year in college football. Before his brief stint at the University of Utah, Brewer was a productive quarterback at Baylor. In four years at Baylor, Brewer passed for 9,700 yards. He had more eligibility after his time in Waco because the 2020 season was a free year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So he went to the Utes and now to the east coast with Liberty.
The October matchup between BYU and Liberty will be the second all-time meeting between the two schools. They first met in 2019 in a game that saw BYU defeat the Flames in Provo, 31-24.
Like BYU, Liberty is entering its final season as an FBS Independent. Beginning in 2023, the Flames will be a member of Conference USA.
