PROVO, Utah – It might feel like the BYU football season just ended, but a new year is around the corner.

The 2022 spring football schedule kicks off for Kalani Sitake and his program beginning February 28 and concluding March 25.

There has been no announcement or decision on a spring game or “open practice” to the public. Two years ago, the spring game was canceled due to COVID-19. Last year, bad weather sent the open practice indoors to the Indoor Practice Facility.

During the spring season, teams can have 15 practices with 20 hours per week of unrestricted activities. No more than 12 of the 15 practices can involve contact and of those 12 contact practices, only eight can involve tackling.

The NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee currently has two proposals regarding physical contact that could go into effect for the 2022 season. Those proposals include limiting full contact to no more than 75 minutes in any one practice period that does not involve a scrimmage. Another proposal would prohibit practice sessions that include full contact from occurring on consecutive days.

2022 is the final year for BYU football as an Independent

The 2022 season marks BYU’s final year as an FBS Independent. After this year, BYU will be a full member of the Big 12 Conference.

Kalani Sitake enters his seventh year as the head coach of the BYU football program. The former BYU fullback has guided the Cougars to back-to-back double-digit win seasons that have concluded with national rankings in the final AP Top 25 poll.

Sitake signed an “unprecedented” contract extension in December that keeps him the head coach at BYU through the 2027 season.

Quarterback Jaren Hall returns to be the lead signal-caller of a BYU offense that was 29th nationally in scoring offense at 33.1 points per game. During the spring season, one of the big questions will be finding an answer to replace the school’s single-season rushing leader in Tyler Allgeier.

BYU brings in grad transfer Chris Brooks from Cal to join a running back room that includes super senior Lopini Katoa and underclassmen Jackson McChesney and Miles Davis.
