SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh said that former BYU quarterback Zach Wilson might see more playing time in the team’s second exhibition game than the action he saw in Week 1 of the NFL preseason.

Saleh discussed Wilson’s progress and Week 2 of the preseason on Tuesday, August 17.

“Hoping to get him a couple of series just like we did against the Giants, maybe a couple more, maybe one or two more,” the Jets head coach said of Wilson’s potential playing time in Week 2. “We’ll see. We got to talk towards the end of the week, see how these practices go.”

Wilson and the Jets opened their preseason slate against the New York Giants on Saturday, August 14.

The former BYU signal-caller played two series and helped the Jets score on a field goal on their opening offensive drive. Wilson finished the contest 6/9 passing for 63 yards.

Following the Jets’ 12-7 win over the Giants, Saleh praised his rookie quarterback.

“We have so much confidence in the young man,” Saleh said. “You want him to stack up as many good days as possible, but there’s still youth. He’s still a rookie. There are still a lot of things that he’s going to learn from. There’s still a lot of opportunities for him to grow. Even here — in this game — despite the fact that he looked comfortable and he did a nice job, there are still things he can learn off of. It’s never going to end. This young man’s potential is through the roof, but it’s going to be a process.”

New York’s second preseason contest is against the Green Bay Packers on Saturday, August 21 at 2:25 p.m. (MDT). The game will broadcast on the NFL Network.

Wilson and the Jets open the regular season against the Carolina Panthers on September 12 at 11 a.m. (MDT). The game will broadcast on CBS.
