SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah Jazz fell in a tough overtime battle to the Phoenix Suns despite a big performance by Donovan Mitchell.

The Suns hosted the Jazz at Phoenix Suns Arena on Wednesday, April 7.

Utah didn’t have enough gas in the tank in the matchup between the Western Conference’s top two teams and fell 117-113 in overtime.

Mitchell led the Jazz with a game-high 41 points.

Game Flow

The Jazz got off to a slow start against the Suns and trailed 13-4 five minutes into the game.

Even though things weren’t rolling early, Utah would take a one-point lead into the second quarter.

In the 12 minutes before halftime, the Suns cooked the Jazz and went into the halftime break with a double-digit lead.

Utah scored a season-low 40 points in the first half.

After the break, Mitchell looked to be in postseason form. The Jazz guard helped his team outscore the Suns 39-26 in the third quarter.

Phoenix and Utah went back-and-forth over the final quarter and the Suns held a lead in the final minute before Mitchell brought some more magic.

With 10.8 seconds left in regulation, Mitchell rose up from beyond the arc and buried a triple to tie the game at 102. The Jazz forced a miss on the Suns’ next possession and the game went to overtime.

Overtime

After exerting a lot of energy to get back into the game in the second half and force overtime, the Jazz looked tired in the final five minutes of the game.

The Suns outscored the Jazz 7-2 during the first 2:55 of the extra period.

Over the final two minutes, Suns guard Devin Booker and Chris Paul outdueled Mitchell and Mike Conley to close out the game and win by four points.

Donovan Mitchell

Mitchell scored his game-high 41 points on 16-35 field goals, including 4-12 from downtown.

He added eight rebounds and three assists in 41 minutes of action.

Mitchell committed only one turnover in the loss.

Utah Jazz

The Jazz struggled to find their three-point shot for the second contest in a row.

At one point, Utah was 3-20 or 15.0 percent on attempts from distance.

The Jazz ended the game shooting 44.7 percent overall and 11-44 for 25.0 percent on triples.

All five Jazz starters posted negative plus-minus ratings during their time on the hardwood.

Utah five players score in double figures.

Bojan Bogdanovic supported Mitchell’s big game with 20 points of his own.

Rudy Gobert had big game with 16 points, 18 rebounds, two assists, and three steals.

Phoenix Suns

The Suns finished the contest shooting 44.6 percent from the field, including 32.4 percent on threes.

Phoenix out-rebounded Utah by 16 boards, nine of which came on the offensive glass.

Booker led the Suns with 35 points.

Paul poured in 29 points.

The win was Phoenix’s seventh straight.

Up Next

With the loss, the Jazz fell to a record of 38-13 this season, including 16-11 on the road.

The Jazz sit 1.5 games ahead of the Suns in the Western Conference standings.

Utah’s next game is at home against the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday, April 8 at 8 p.m. (MDT). The game will broadcast on AT&T SportsNet and 97.5 FM.
