SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former Utah running back Devonta’e Henry-Cole is making another move within the state of Utah. Originally signed to play for BYU in 2020 as a graduate transfer, Henry-Cole is now taking his talents to Utah State up in the Cache Valley a source tells KSL Sports.

A move that could come as a surprise as Henry-Cole was projected to be in competition with Lopini Katoa to be BYU’s starting running back this fall. BYU offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes said at Signing Day this past February that Henry-Cole “will add some acceleration and speed in our backfield that will give us something a little bit different there.”

DHC’s arrival in the Cache Valley would mark the second former Utah player that has transferred to Utah State to play for Gary Andersen in the past week. The other transfer being former Utah quarterback Jason Shelley, who many believe is the leader to be the Aggies starting quarterback after Henry Colombi entered the Transfer Portal.

Both Henry-Cole and Shelley were teammates at Utah for the past three years and were student-athletes on the hill when Gary Andersen coached Utah’s defensive line in 2018.

Devonta’e Henry-Cole: Career at Utah

In four seasons at Utah, the 5-foot-11, 196-pound Henry-Cole compiled 469 rushing yards on 90 carries. Good for an average of 5.2 yards per carry. Henry-Cole graduated from Utah with a degree in sociology giving him the opportunity to play immediately this season.

The talent of Utah’s all-time leading rusher in Zack Moss and a season-ending arm injury in 2018 were big factors in Henry-Cole seeing limiting playing time with the Utes.

Now with one year of eligibility remaining, Henry-Cole teams up in a Utah State backfield with Doak Walker Award candidate Jaylen Warren to form one of the best running back tandems in the Mountain West Conference.

As of right now, Henry-Cole’s debut as an Aggie would come against in-state foe Southern Utah on September 12th in Logan. Then the next scheduled game is October 2nd against BYU in Provo.
