SALT LAKE CITY – Utah high school football is back for another season. The 2022 campaign on the prep gridiron kicks off with a full slate of games on Friday, August 12.
With the quality and quantity of prospects coming from Utah each year, BYU makes the Beehive State a top priority in its recruiting efforts.
Here are my top ten local prep standouts that Cougar fans should be watching for during KSL’s Game Night Live recaps this season. Some are uncommitted prospects. Others are already committed to playing for BYU.
Uncommitted players in the class of 2023
Spencer Fano, Timpview
Offensive Tackle | 6-5 | 270
Some of my highlights against Skyridge!! Came up short in the end but we’ll get after it this week! @T_BirdFootball @CoachAndyStokes @coach_OFFA @bangulo @bcavi68 @StuTua @BrandonHuffman pic.twitter.com/OCotlU5qDd
— Spencer Fano (@FanoSpencer) September 13, 2021
Fano is the number seven offensive tackle nationally by 247Sports’ ratings in the class of 2023. A great athlete with room to grow into his frame, Fano has suitors, including BYU, Utah, USC, UCLA, and Miami.
Smith Snowden, Skyridge
Cornerback | 5-9 | 173
The work has been done. Time for the 🔥 Gentlemen! Trust your Coaches, & Teammates. Play Smart, Play Fast, Play Physical, and Play with Honor! Go Be Great!✊🏾💯#AlphaFootball
@alpha_lbu @Ezwrighter10 @DreSnowden @BillyTheKid_7 @MrEdouble25 pic.twitter.com/cbUMI2B6HN— Will Snowden (@AlphaRecruits15) August 11, 2022
Snowden is the best cornerback prospect to come out of Utah. The son of former BYU running back Will Snowden, BYU is contending with Utah, Stanford, Colorado, and Northwestern for Smith.
Motekiai Mounga, Timpview
Defensive Line | 6-3 | 250
Go Cougars!!!!💙🤍
Much Love!!@coachtuiaki @CoachPHadley @kalanifsitake @T_BirdFootball @DonnyAtuaia @CoachLaumatia pic.twitter.com/vwAQy4N5ek— Motekiai Mounga (@MotekiaiMounga) August 1, 2022
BYU has been pursuing Mounga, the versatile defensive end or defensive tackle, for more than a year. He has offers from Utah State and UNLV, among others.
Keep an eye out for these 2023 BYU commits
Matthew Fredrick, East
Tight End | 6-5 | 230
Dreams to Reality💙🤍 @kalanifsitake @CoachRoderick @Coach_DFunk @OldEastHighFB @CoachBMatich @bangulo pic.twitter.com/k6GwqLtS2Q
— Matthew Fredrick (@Matthew_fred21) August 1, 2022
One of the recent commits in BYU’s 2023 class, Fredrick, is a big-bodied tight end target that will likely show why coaches such as Steve Clark wanted to add him to BYU’s first Big 12 class.
Miles Hall, Skyline
Linebacker | 6-2 | 195
COMMITTED‼️🔵⚪️ @BYUfootball @kalanifsitake @CoachKevinClune @jrcoy23 @BYU_CoachJustin #GoCougs pic.twitter.com/KoCenAcsD5
— Miles Hall (@MilesHall004) July 1, 2022
Versatile athlete. Hall could line up at receiver, defensive back, or linebacker at Skyline High School. At BYU, he projects as a linebacker. Think of him as a flash linebacker of the future.
Ryder Burton, Springville
Quarterback | 6-2 | 180
It’s official let’s work @BYU_CoachJustin @CoachRoderick @kalanifsitake @CoachMeetch @tysonmcdaniel10 @ValetiTevita pic.twitter.com/BxbREMJlPi
— Ryder Burton (@RyderBurton5) August 2, 2022
Burton has had a productive summer. Now he enters his final prep season with a more prominent spotlight as a BYU QB commit. Many eyes will be on Burton, who seems poised for a huge season.
Owen Borg, Corner Canyon
Linebacker | 6-2 | 190
Childhood dream come true…I am so thankful to everyone who has helped me get here. I am committed to BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY!!! Go Cougs!!!🤙🔵⚪️ @kalanifsitake pic.twitter.com/SJdktZ3FWH
— Owen Borg (@Owenborg10) August 8, 2022
The latest commit to BYU’s “Elite 23” class, Borg is the latest from the Corner Canyon linebacker pipeline BYU has pulled from in recent years. First, it was Josh Wilson, then his younger brother, Micah, and now it’s Borg.
Utah High School Football players that are uncommitted in the 2024 class
Tei Nacua, Timpview
Wide Receiver | 6-2 | 170
View this post on Instagram
Yes, another Nacua is making his presence felt on the prep scene here in Utah. The younger brother to Puka and Samson, Tei is another wide receiver prospect in the family. Nacua holds offers from BYU, Utah, and Hawaii before his junior season.
Isaac Wilson, Corner Canyon
Quarterback | 6-0 | 166
Had a great time competing and making new friends at the @Elite11 today. Got lucky and won the Accuracy challenge for the class of 2024. pic.twitter.com/Sfw20LGmj3
— Isaac Wilson (@Isaac_kawika) June 6, 2022
Zach Wilson, Cole Hagen, Jaxson Dart, and Devin Brown. That’s the last four QBs to roll through Corner Canyon. No pressure for Isaac, right?
The younger brother to Zach, Isaac likely will embrace the pressure. He’s already proven to be a star on the 7-on-7 circuit. Now he officially takes over the Corner Corner juggernaut.
Class of 2024 BYU Commit
Dallin Johnson, Springville
Defensive Line | 6-4 | 270
Pair of kings👑👑@BYUfootball @kanuch78 @SHSRedDevilFtbl @RyderBurton5 pic.twitter.com/sysiG5gCof
— Dallin Johnson (@DallinJohnson73) August 2, 2022
Johnson has already piled up 91 tackles in his career and he still has two years remaining at Springville. The first commit of BYU’s 2024 class, Johnson has been committed since last summer.
