BYU Punter Ryan Rehkow Busts For Cougars’ Longest Run Of 2020 Season

PROVO, Utah – BYU punter Ryan Rehkow executed a fake punt and ran the ball for 49 yards against the Texas State Bobcats.
The No. 12 Cougars hosted the Bobcats at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday, October 24.
With the Cougars up 49-14 and only 6:15 left in regulation, Rehkow decided to the run ball for a first down on 4th & 1 from the BYU 34-yard line.

The fake punt run resulted in the longest run play for the BYU offense this season.

Four plays later, BYU kicker Jake Oldroyd kicked a 28-yard field goal to stretch the Cougars’ lead to 52-14 with 4:44 left in the fourth quarter. The Cougars came away with a 52-14 victory to move to 6-0 for the first time since 2008.
In the postgame, BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said he wished that Rehkow would have just punted on the rugby-style play. Sitake said that he apologized to Texas State head coach Jake Spavital after the game for the fake punt.

The fifth-year head coach also jokingly said that the fake punt will be a highlight that former BYU punter Jonny Linehan will now be jealous of going forward.
