Utes Bulletin: Things Happening In Utah Athletics (Week Of 3/6/23)

Mar 6, 2023, 1:19 PM

SALT LAKE CITY โ€“ย With football on a bit of a hiatus till spring ball kicks off and several of the smaller sports in full-swing and having success, we thought a one-stop-shop for little tidbits of Utah Athletics information might be helpful for you, the fan, with the Utes Bulletin.

If you missed any of the highlights from the previous week, you can review that here.

Without further ado, here is this weekโ€™s Utes Bulletin that includes ranking updates, upcoming events for the week, and important dates to keep track of among other things of interest concerning Utah Athletics for the week of 3/6/23.

Utah Gymnastics

The Red Rocks wrapped up their regular season home schedule at the Huntsman on Friday against Arizona and it was an emotional affair from start to finish.

Utah officially said good-bye to three Red Rocks in Michigan transfer Abby Brenner, happy-go-lucky Cristal Isa, and tough-as-nails Jillian Hoffman. The Utes also got a nice surprise that three other seniors opted to use their Covid-year to come back for 2024. Fans can look forward to watching Jaedyn Rucker, Abby Paulson, and Maile O’Keefe for one more year.

That wasn’t the end of the highlight reel on Senior Night though. Isa scored her second perfect 10 on beam to end her Utah career in a fitting way. If that wasn’t touching enough, the 2023 Red Rock senior class dedicated their senior leo design to Aaron Lowe who was a good friend to several of the out-going athletes. It was later revealed Rucker used her NIL earnings to fly Lowe’s mother to Salt Lake to be part of their celebration of life for her son.ย

Rankings And Honors

After jumping up to No. 3 in the country last week, the Red Rocks have dipped back down to No. 4 this week in the NQS.

Last week Rucker was given the honor of being Pac-12 Specialist of the Week after earning her first collegiate career perfect 10 on vault.

Who, What, When, Where

The Red Rocks will be on the road this week to wrap up the regular season in Corvallis against Oregon State on Saturday, March 11. The meet starts at 3:00 p.m. MT and can be viewed on Pac-12 Network.

This meet will be one of two final chances for the Utes to improve the road scores they can count toward NQS.

Utah Men’s Basketball

The Runnin’ Utes wrapped up their regular season last Saturday in Boulder against Colorado. Despite having both Rollie Worster and Gabe Madsen back in their lineup, the Utes fell short against the Buffaloes, ending their season on a three-game losing streak.ย

The good news is that Utah has a chance to right the ship a bit this week in Las Vegas in the Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Tournament starting on Wednesday, March 8.

Outside of the early exit in the Pac-12 Tournament, it continued to be a great week for the Utes as they cleaned up on the Pac-12 Awards while Alissa Pili and Gianna Kneepkens made it into the final five for some national awards as well.

In The Rankings

The Utah women remain in the Top 10 (No. 8) of the AP Top 25 Poll heading into Selection Sunday this weekend.

Who, What, When, Where

The Utah women’s basketball team will have their eyes on Sunday, March 12 this week as they will learn their official fate for the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.ย

You can follow along with the Selection Sunday fun for the women on ESPN starting at 6:00 p.m. MT.

Utah Ski Team

The Skiing Utes will be off to Lake Placid, New York to compete for another National Title. Utah already claims 15 National Skiing Titles with the hopes of adding a 16th starting Wednesday, March 8 and going through Saturday, March 11.

The Utes will be one of four teams with the maximum of 12 selections competing, meaning, three athletes per gender, per discipline. Colorado, Dartmouth and Vermont are the other programs sending 12 athletes to compete.

We will have as many updates as to the Utes’ progress as possible throughout the week.

Utah Football

Oh, happy day. We have a media spring football schedule and some important dates to keep an eye on as we get ever closer to the 2023 Utah football season.

Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more Utah football content as we get closer to their Spring Football start date of March 21.

Pro Ute Stuff

Utah Baseball

Kaden Carpenter and TJ Clarkson both hit a home run for the Utes, but Utah was unable to get much else going on Sunday as the squad dropped the rubber game, 14-3, to UTSA at Roadrunner Field.

Utah now sits at 5-6 and will now be heading to Cal State Fullerton as part of the team’s Spring Break trip. First pitch is set for Tuesday, March 7, at 7:00 p.m. MT at Goodwin Field. This will be Utah’s final preseason game before opening Pac-12 Conference play at Washington from March 10-12.

Utah Lacross

It was another difficult weekend for Utah Lacrosse on the road at Rutgers. The Utes battled hard, but ultimately succumbed to the Scarlet Knights 18-14.

Utah will be getting a much-needed break before hosting Bellarmine on Saturday, March 18 with a 7:00 p.m. MT faceoff at Ute Field. The team will be on record watch as Jordan Hyde only needs five more goals to become the all-time leader in career goals.
