Southern Utah Men’s Basketball Burns Bethesda For Third Straight Victory

SALT LAKE CITY – The Southern Utah men’s basketball team put out the Flames of Bethesda University to capture the Thunderbirds’ third consecutive victory.

The T-Birds hosted the Flames at America First Events Center on Monday, November 14.

SUU beat Bethesda, 126-67.

The victory was one that went wire-to-wire for the Thunderbirds. In addition to never trailing during the contest, Southern Utah built its lead to 65 points in the second half.

The Thunderbirds cooked the Flames throughout the entire contest. SUU opened the game with a 68-point first half and took a 35-point lead into the locker room at halftime. Over the final 20 minutes of game time, the Thunderbirds added 58 points compared to only 34 by the Flames.

Southern Utah finished the game shooting 59.8 percent overall and 35.5 percent on three-pointers. Bethesda shot 38.6 percent from the field, including 28.1 percent from beyond the arc.

The Thunderbirds owned big advantages in multiple statistical categories, including rebounds, assists, steals, and turnovers. SUU outrebounded Bethesda by 20 boards, 51-31. The T-Birds dished out 29 assists compared to only eight by the Flames. The T-Birds stole the ball 17 times and only suffered from seven steals by the Flames. Southern Utah also turned the ball over 13 fewer times.

Seven Thunderbirds reached double figures in scoring, including four of the five SUU starters.

Jason Spurgin and Dee Barnes led Southern Utah with 16 points apiece. Martel Williams poured in 15 points off the bench. Parsa Fallah scored 14 points as a part of SUU’s second unit. Maizen Fausett added 13 points. Harrison Butler and Cameron Healy each scored 11 points as a part of Southern Utah’s starting lineup.

Amar Ross led the Flames with 22 points.

With the win, the Thunderbirds improved their record to 3-1 this season. Southern Utah’s next game is on the road against the No. 6 Kansas Jayhawks on Friday, November 18 at 6 p.m. (MDT0. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
