PROVO, Utah – One of the big storylines entering BYU football fall camp is the health of tight end Isaac Rex.

Rex suffered a season-ending injury during the regular season finale against USC. It was a gruesome leg injury that required Rex to get carted off the field.

The 6-foot-6, 254-pound tight end didn’t participate in spring practices. However, all the reports heading into fall camp have indicated that Rex is ahead of schedule on his recovery.

“Isaac [Rex] is mentally ready to go”

BYU head coach Kalani Sitake provided another update on Rex during an interview with Greg Wrubell.

The Voice of the Cougars asked Sitake how close Rex is to “full-go” for camp.

“Isaac is mentally ready to go,” Sitake said to Wrubell. “Even from the injury, he hasn’t lost confidence and his work ethic has allowed him to return way faster than we expected.

“But, watching him and seeing him, we’re going to have to just really be smart with keeping him on a good pitch count, meaning we know what he’s done in the past and what he can do. It’s just a matter of giving other guys opportunities to get better and providing more depth to the tight end group. But also being smart with him.”

BYU football practice begins on Thursday

BYU football players reported to Camp Kalani on Wednesday, with the first practice set for Thursday afternoon.

Rex has emerged as a pivotal piece to BYU’s offense that has seen the Cougars produce 21 victories in the past two years.

Since 2020, Rex has racked up 15 touchdowns and totaled 55 receptions for 620 yards. Entering this season, Rex has garnered NFL draft buzz from individuals such as ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.

During spring practices, BYU saw junior Dallin Holker take a big step forward in his game as he was the primary tight end with Rex out. The former Lehi High star could be utilized as more of a standup receiver in BYU’s offense.

BYU’s first game of the 2022 season is one month away against the USF Bulls in Tampa, Florida.
