PROVO, Utah – BYU athletics continues making moves before entering the Big 12 Conference on July 1, 2023.

On Tuesday, BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe announced “structural changes” to the senior leadership in BYU’s athletic department.

The moves include promotions for three BYU athletics staffers in David Almodova, Dallan Moody, and Trevor Wilson. All three have been named senior associate athletic directors.

Three new Sr. Associate ADs, plus a hire from Clemson University

The three senior associate ADs will report to Tom Holmoe, and the associate athletic directors will now report to Almodova, Moody, and Wilson.

“While these changes won’t completely overhaul our day-to-day operations as they are now in BYU Athletics, they will increase efficiencies for us dramatically and be an essential part of our future success,” Holmoe said. “Getting ready for the jump to the Big 12 is not just the responsibility of our student-athletes and coaches. Every member of our BYU administrative, part-time and even student staff is essential and is being asked to step up, with the structures and resources in place to help us be our best. These changes at the top of our leadership structure will set us up for success as we look to enter the Big 12 in a position of strength. We’ll never look exactly like another athletic department. BYU is different, and we’ll continue to be different, and operate in the ways that are best for us and in line with our unique mission and vision, but as we’ve proven over the years, our uniqueness will not hold us back from being successful. In fact, it is what will ultimately make us the most successful we can be.”

BYU also announced a new associate athletic director from Clemson, Tyson Hutchins. Hutchins will lead creative strategy for BYU’s athletic department, which will oversee social media and creative content.

Hutchins is an alum of BYU, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from BYU. He was previously a three/fourth student employee in BYU Athletics and then had a full-time role as digital content and new media coordinator.

Last week, Hutchins, who was at Clemson since December 2019, announced his departure from the Tigers athletic department.

BYU Athletics continues to build up staff for the Big 12 move

These moves are just the latest example of BYU’s efforts to build up its personnel in preparation for the Big 12. Back in February and May, BYU football announced analysts and support staff that assist in the day-to-day operation.

Finding areas to improve the athletic department has been significant for BYU athletics since they received their official invitation to the Big 12 last September.

“The past nine months and into the next year, we’ve been meeting with every area of our department and every coaching staff. We’re talking through [areas needed to maintain success in the Big 12],” said BYU Sr. Associate AD Liz Darger to KSL Sports at the Big 12 Spring Meetings. “Where are their gaps? Where are the things and resources that will be helpful to make sure our coaching staffs have what they need to be successful? So it’s all sort of things. It’s looking at facilities, how we travel, our staffing, and the resources we provide our student-athletes. So we really are trying to look at every angle of each of our coaching staffs and our programs and our department; where we feel like we always maximize the resources we have, and we will continue to do that.”

BYU athletics now has 18 people in its athletics administration.
