Part of Kalani Sitake’s “unprecedented” extension that BYU announced in December included additional support staff hires, from nutrition, recruiting, strength & conditioning, and other areas. The extension coincided with BYU’s upcoming move to the Big 12 Conference to ramp up the resources and investment.
Here are the five additional staff hires that BYU announced on Friday.
Gavin Fowler, Defensive Analyst
A former BYU safety, Fowler has been part of BYU’s coaching staff since his eligibility as a player concluded. Fowler was a defensive graduate assistant the past three seasons. When he completed his playing career at BYU, he knew that he wanted to begin a career in coaching.
Fowler’s father, Blaine, was a former BYU quarterback on the 1984 National Championship team. He also had two older brothers play at BYU in Kellen (2002-2003, 2006-2008) and Landon (2009-2010).
Tyson McDaniel, Offensive Analyst
Tyson McDaniel was previously on the Arizona State support staff for two seasons from 2019 to 2020 under head coach Herm Edwards. A native of Mesa, Arizona, McDaniel played quarterback at Snow College in Ephraim during his playing career.
Matt Mitchell, Offensive Analyst
Mitchell was previously on BYU’s coaching staff in 2020 as a graduate assistant under Jeff Grimes. He followed Grimes to Baylor as an offensive analyst last season during the Bears Big 12 Championship campaign.
A former wide receiver at Division III Wheaton (Ill.) College, Mitchell has had coaching stops at Notre Dame and Western Kentucky. In 2018, Mitchell was a full-time quarterbacks coach on the staff at Western Kentucky under previous Hilltopper head coach Mike Sanford Jr.
Spencer Reid, Strength & Conditioning Assistant
Reid is the son to Kansas City Chiefs head coach and former BYU offensive lineman Andy Reid. Before BYU, Reid was most recently an assistant strength coach for Steve Addazio’s Colorado State program for the past two years.
Dalton Elliott, Strength & Conditioning Assistant
Elliott comes to BYU via Utah State, where he was also a strength and conditioning assistant the past two seasons. Before that, he was a graduate assistant for the Aggies. In 2018, Elliott was an intern for LSU Football.
More hires are on the way
BYU announced earlier this week that they are hiring for a full-time recruiting graphic designer. This would be a new position that leads the creative strategy for BYU’s football recruiting efforts. Another sign that BYU is investing more than ever in their transition to the Big 12 Conference.
