SALT LAKE CITYTrevor Lewis seems to thrive in playoffs. After spending 11 seasons and winning two Stanley Cups with the LA Kings, Lewis found a new home, with some familiar faces in Calgary.

When Darryl Sutter took over the struggling Calgary Flames, he immediately reached out to Lewis to bring his leadership and work ethic to the Flames. He also needed Lewis’ playoff experience for his young club. “He knows his job to a tee. If you’re asking about Lewis along the wall or making a play, there’s a good chance he’s going to make the play.” Coach Sutter told the media after game one against Dallas.

Over the past 13 seasons, including the two in which Lewis won the cup, he emerged as a playoff specialist whose speed and tenacity draws penalties and keeps opposing teams in their defensive zones, and does the mucking that may not show up on the score sheet, but helps tip the balance of a game. The kind of play that won him the “Unsung Hero” award 9 times in LA.

Lewis had only 16 points in 80 games this season with Calgary, 0.2 points per game average but in the playoffs, Lewis already has 3 points in 7 games for a .42 P.P.G.A.

Lewis has been more noticeable on the ice in other facets as well. His hits per game are up, time on penalty kill is up, and in-game 7 against Dallas, it was Lewis’s line that kept the pressure on the Stars, and created the most scoring chances including one that not only was stopped by an amazing set of saves by Star’s goalie Jake Oettinger, but set up the offensive zone faceoff that le to the game-winning goal.

The Flames start the “Battle for Alberta” tonight as they face the Edmonton Oilers who have two former Utah Grizzlies in net (Mike Smith 2002-03 and 2003-04, and Mikko Koskinen 2009-10).

Expect to see more Flames fans in Utah the deeper Calgary makes it into the playoffs. Lewis has been good to the state of Utah bringing the Stanley Cup home and sharing it with Utahns both times he won it with LA.
