SALT LAKE CITY – Remember former BYU and Utah Valley forward Wyatt Lowell? In case you lost track, the 6-foot-9 prospect from Gilbert, Arizona, Lowell played at Snow College during the 2021-22 season.

After betting on himself by going back to junior college basketball, Lowell is making a return to Division I hoops.

Wyatt Lowell signs with the Portland Pilots

Lowell announced on social media that he has committed to the Portland Pilots. The Pilots compete in BYU’s league for one more season, the West Coast Conference.

Lowell’s new head coach at Portland, second-year Pilot headman Shantay Legans, greeted Lowell with a welcome message on social media, “#PilotNation Please help me welcome @lowell_wyatt and his wife Alyssa to our @PortlandMBB family #GOpilots.”

Lowell’s college career to date

During his one season at Snow College, Lowell averaged 13.3 points and shot 44.5% from the field and 39% from three.

Coming out of high school, Lowell was the highest-rated recruit to ever sign with Utah Valley University. Lowell signed with the Wolverines when Mark Pope was the head coach. He was the 2019 WAC Freshman of the Year in his first season in Orem.

After that year, he followed Mark Pope down University Parkway to BYU. He redshirted the 2019-20 season due to NCAA transfer rules that were in still implement at that time. Then the following year, Lowell was dealing with a torn labrum he suffered in the summer of 2020. Because of the labrum injury, Lowell was used sparingly at the beginning of the 2020-21 season.

He saw action in loss at No. 1 Gonzaga on January 7, 2021, and in that game he suffered a torn Achilles injury, bringing his season, and ultimately his time at BYU to a close.

Being a junior college transfer, Lowell will be eligible immediately for the 2022-23 season. He arrives on the Bluff with two years of eligibility remaining in his collegiate career.
