BYU Basketball Forward Wyatt Lowell To Have Surgery On Torn Labrum

PROVO, Utah –  BYU basketball forward Wyatt Lowell, a transfer from Utah Valley University suffered a torn labrum last week in practice according to his personal social media.

Lowell, a 6-foot-10, 205-pound transfer from Utah Valley University, is heading in for surgery on Tuesday he wrote on his Instagram.

“Hey y’all, I’m heading into surgery today. I tore my labrum playing basketball last week. I’m super sad but this stuff happens and I’m excited to get back with the guys asap. Go Cougs!”

Last season, Lowell sat out due to NCAA transfer rules and redshirted in his first year at BYU. This upcoming season, Lowell is viewed as a player that could potentially be in BYU’s starting lineup.

A former four-star recruit according to one recruiting service, Lowell was the highest-rated prospect to ever sign with Utah Valley University out of Gilbert, Arizona. In his one season at UVU, Lowell was WAC Freshman of the Year.

Lowell competed in BYU’s practices last season as a member of the scout team that featured fellow former UVU transfer Richard Harward. In practices, Lowell at times created mismatches going up against the Cougars first unit that put together a 24-8 record and No. 18 final AP ranking a season ago.

During one of Mark Pope’s weekly coaches shows (heard on KSL NewsRadio) last season, Pope said he believed Lowell has the potential to be an All-American at some point during his BYU career.

It’s not known how long Lowell will be out from this torn labrum injury. KSL Sports reached out to BYU for comment on the potential timetable Lowell could be sidelined.

Mark Pope’s program is already familiar with handling a torn labrum injury to a rising star in the frontcourt. Last season, BYU forward Gavin Baxter suffered a torn labrum injury in preseason practices causing him to miss all but the final seven games of the season.
