Real Salt Lake Stun Revolution With Final Minute Tate Schmitt Dagger

SALT LAKE CITY – Real Salt Lake managed to claw back from two goals down on the road against New England Revolution to pinch all three points at Gillette Stadium.

“I think in games like this it is about putting the ball in dangerous areas and I thought in the first half we got into good areas and we didn’t have numbers in the box and we didn’t have service. So you do all of this work and in a game like this when it’s about mistakes; who is going to make the more mistakes?” Manager Pablo Mastroeni said immediately following the conclusion of the game. “I thought we got the ball out to [Andrew] Brody and Tate [Schmitt] a couple of times who put the ball into the box forcing [New England] to drop their lines deeper. Those types of players build momentum, build belief for your group, and really put a lot of doubt into the opponents,” Mastroeni added.

In snowy conditions, Real Salt Lake conceded their first goal of the season in the 47th minute when Emmanuel Boateng found the back of the net beating Zac MacMath to the bottom right-hand corner of the net. The second goal conceded came shortly after Revolution manager Bruce Arena brought on Sebastian Lletget and Jozy Altidore when Altidore found himself in the right place at the right time and easily headed home the game’s second goal.

Real Salt Lake was able to poach a goal back making the final quarter of an hour very interesting when Sergio Córdova scored his first goal since January 21st  of 2021 and his first goal in a Real Salt Lake kit.

Then, in the 88th minute, Pablo Ruiz floated a cross into the area from a set-piece that Justen Glad got on the end of beating the Revolution goalkeeper and tieing up proceedings in Foxborough.

In the 93rd and final minute of the game, Ruiz played a ball out to the left flank that found the feet of Tate Schmitt who played a behind-the-leg pass to Justen Glad who quickly played it back to Schmitt. Two touches later and Schmitt unleashed a vigorous right-footed shot from just inside the area that nestled into the right-hand panel of the net.

“We were just pushing to play forward by putting Jasper [Löeffelsend] in. The ball got deflected out, I took a touch in that space and I was at the point where my legs were just done so like it was more just a hope, you know, but I was able to put it on frame and good things happen when you strike the ball hard,” Schmitt explained in the post-game press conference.

Real Salt Lake stole all three points despite being down two goals with just half an hour of play remaining.

Pablo Mastroeni entered the fixture with an unchanged lineup from a week ago while Arena was forced to make a handful of changes due to last week’s midweek Champions League fixture.

With the win, Real Salt Lake climb the Western Conference from the fifth position to the second position and join LAFC tied atop the conference on seven points.
