Jazz Suffer Third Loss In Four Games, Enter All-Star Break With Overtime Loss To 76ers

Mar 3, 2021, 7:45 PM | Updated: 8:30 pm

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Donovan Mitchell’s big game wasn’t enough to propel Utah into the All-Star break with a victory and the Jazz suffered an overtime loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Sixers hosted the Jazz at Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday, March 3.

Mitchell scored 33 points to lead the Jazz in a 131-123 loss to the Sixers. The loss was Utah’s second straight and third in four games.

Donovan Mitchell

It was Mitchell’s 10th game this season with at least 30 points.

After some questionable calls late in the fourth quarter and overtime, Mitchell was assessed a pair of technical fouls in overtime and was ejected from the contest in the final minute.

Some of the calls were so controversial that even Utah’s Governor Spencer Cox chimed in on the action.

“Good on Donovan. That 2nd technical was for all of us,” Cox tweeted.

Mitchell’s 33 points came on 12-34 shooting, including 5-12 on three-pointers. He also had eight rebounds, six assists, and one steal in 42 minutes.

Final Minutes

The Jazz entered the final quarter with a five-point advantage and were unable to close the game out in regulation.

76ers All-Star Joel Embiid buried a three-pointer over Bojan Bogdanovic with 6.5 seconds left to tie the game at 118.

Mike Conley was unable to connect on a driving floater as the buzzer sounded and the two teams played an extra five minutes.

In overtime, the Jazz were visible frustrated with the calls against them and the lack of calls against the Sixers.

Mitchell’s frustration boiled over to the points of an ejection and Tobias Harris helped Philadelphia close out the game with 11 points in overtime.

Jazz Stats

Utah had six players score in double figures. In addition to Mitchell, Bogdanovic, Conley, Rudy Gobert, Jordan Clarkson, and Joe Ingles all had 10 or more points.

Bogdanovic, Conley, and Gobert combined for 48 points.

Ingles led Utah’s second unit with 16 points.

The Jazz ended up shooting 44.0 percent from the field, including 47.7 percent on triples.

Sixers Stars

Philadelphia shot 51.6 percent overall and 32.0 percent from beyond the arc.

The 76ers also had six players score at least 10 points.

Embiid led the Sixers with 40 points, 19 rebounds, three assists, one steal, and two blocks.

All-Star Break

With the loss, the Jazz fell to a record of 27-9 on the season.

The Jazz will have more than a week off due to the All-Star break. Quin Snyder, Rudy Gobert, and Mitchell will represent the Jazz during the All-Star events on Sunday, March 7.

Utah’s next game will be against the Houston Rockets on Friday, March 12 at 8 p.m. (MDT). The game will broadcast on AT&T SportsNet and 97.5 FM.
