SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The upcoming high school football game between the No. 6 Brighton Bengals and the No. 13 Skyline Eagles has been canceled due to COVID-19, sources told KSLSports.com.

Skyline was slated to host Brighton on Friday, September 25.

The contest was scratched following an outbreak of the coronavirus disease within the Eagles’ football program.

In addition the contest against Brighton, Skyline’s following game against Highland on October 2 was canceled.

In July, when we approved our return to school plans, our board committed to our communities and teachers that we would abide by the State Health Department guidance and recommendations,” Granite Board of Education president Karyn Winder said in a statement about the cancellation. “We are not inclined to disregard these scientifically based recommendations. Safety for our students, their families, and employees will continue to be paramount above all else.”

Sunday, September 20, Skyline principal Mitch Nerdin sent a letter to parents to address the situation. KSLSports.com obtained a copy of the Nerdin’s letter. The following is a portion of his comments to the parents:

“We have received official notice from the Salt Lake County Health Department that indicates that with current overlaps between cases (newly confirmed and recovering), we now have 4 COVID cases amongst our team members. This has resulted in a recommendation to dismiss the class/team through Thursday, October 1st. All students/athletes who participate in Class 1B are part of a complete dismissal to distance learning through that time period and will not be able to return to in-person instruction until Friday, October 2nd. This also means that our team will not be able to practice or play in the duration.” – Skyline principal Mitch Nerdin

Both teams are currently undefeated and own 6-0 records this season.
