Utah State Has League-Best 132 Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Honors

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State announced on Tuesday that they led all institutions in the Mountain West Conference with 132 Scholar-Athlete honors among 111 student-athletes.

The conference announced the Scholar-Athlete awards on Tuesday, where USU was among a league-record 1,023 student-athletes that were recognized.

The Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors by the conference. In order to become eligible for the award, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, while also having participated in varsity competition in a Mountain West sponsored sport.

Utah State’s Women’s track & field team had the largest number of Scholar-Athletes recognized with 24 honorees. Men’s track & field had 22 recipients, women’s cross country had 15 athletes receive honors, Soccer with 14, men’s cross country and volleyball each had 11 honorees. Football had 8 Scholar-Athletes, along with seven from softball, five from both men’s and women’s basketball, four from women’s tennis while men’s tennis and golf each picked up three.

The 132 Scholar-Athlete honors for Utah State was four more than the second highest among in the conference as New Mexico had 128. Boise State with 125, Fresno State had 113, Wyoming with 107, followed by Nevada’s 92, UNLV’s 92. Colorado State had 82 honorees, along with San Jose State’s 67, Air Force had 65 and San Diego State had 55 Scholar-Athlete honorees.
