LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The USC Trojans football program announced that quarterback J.T. Daniels has entered the transfer portal.

Daniels played in one game as a sophomore in 2019 before suffering a season-ending injury in the season opener.

As a freshman in 2018, Daniels appeared in 11 games for the Trojans.

Daniels released a statement on Thursday about his decision to enter the transfer portal.

“I love this university, coaching staff and team,” Daniels said. “To me, it is in my best interest to explore all my options going into the 2020 season. I will remain in contact with the coaching staff through the process. USC remains one of my options, and that door has remained open for me. Fight on.”

Daniels was replaced by true freshman Kedon Slovis who had an outstanding season for USC. He threw for 3,502 yards 30 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. The Pac-12 awarded him the conference Freshman of the Year.

With Daniels returning from injury and Slovis having a great season, it was turning into a very interesting quarterback battle in Los Angeles. It seemed like Daniels wants to go to another school where he can start right away.

The NCAA will vote on April 24 on whether first time transfers can be immediately eligible rather than sitting out one season.

USC head coach Clay Helton released a statement on Daniels entering the transfer portal.

“We have been working with J.T. and his family as well as our compliance office, to help him navigate the process of entering his name in the transfer portal,” Helton said. “It is his desire to explore all of his options going into the 2020 season. We will continue to support J.T. in every way possible and help him through his decision, including the option of staying on with our football team. J.T. is a terrific person, student, player and valued member of our football team.”
