PROVO, Utah – Spring football was to be a time for BYU quarterback Zach Wilson to go through a full and healthy offseason, but then COVID-19 struck and threw everyone’s world upside.

Wilson has been doing his best to work out and meet with his teammates to workout and prepare for the 2020 opener vs. Utah.

This is a once in a generation kind of offseason and it is all new for everyone. Wilson joined KSL Unrivaled to give an update on how he is practicing, which includes getting in trouble for sneaking into a few on-campus facilities.

“I would say working with teammates is a bit harder. I am closer to my receivers and offensive lineman, but it is tough,” Wilson said. “I feel like we do a pretty good job of meeting with receivers as much as we can do during the week and still trying to throw and lifting. The coaches do a great job of reaching out to all of the players, but we are still getting stuff done.”

College athletes need to be motivated more than ever without the direct supervision of anyone from the coaching or strength staff. Having a quarterback like Wilson working with his teammates – which is likely what other programs across the country are doing – is a necessity to keep growing and becoming a better football player.

How Are Workouts Being Conducted?

Right now there are strict rules of how many people can be in a given area and even where people can be in some parts of the state, so Wilson and teammates getting together takes some time and effort. It is especially so with no one on campus and some living at home.

“Staying with my family so I got food and mom cooks for me every day, so it is the best thing you can ask for,” Wilson said. “I wake up in the morning drive down to Provo at a high school to throw with some of the guys. They don’t want anyone on campus since everything is shut down, and we snuck into some facilities but got mad at us.

“It has happened a couple of times where guys have gone to the weight room or the indoor practice facility. Later that night we get calls or texts from coaches telling us we can’t be there anymore.”

Sneaking in facilities is not the best thing to do at the moment. Sticking to outdoor fields at local high schools or just fields is the way to go and still be able to get better by working on routes, timing, and chemistry.

There will be a lot of individual and small group workouts to do their best to get ready for the upcoming season but it is not the same as being able to workout on campus this summer.
