KSL Unrivaled: Can You Eat Like Utah Star Devin Kaufusi?
Oct 1, 2021, 9:20 AM
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – College football players, specifically the bigger positions like lineman and linebackers have to eat a lot of food to maintain their weight. Utah star Devin Kaufusi talked to KSL Unrivaled about his diet.
The ones that have to gain weight are given so much food throughout the week and right before games to keep up where they need to be. It all seems like too much but then you consider how much they burn off from working out as much as they do.
However, it may not be in the best interest to eat like an FBS football player when you are not. Kaufusi discussed what he eats before a game, and it is wild.
“The night before the game I eat pretty dirty like carbo-loading,” Kaufusi said on KSL NewsRadio. “I eat a lot of food. It is quantity with all the heavy stuff like cheeseburgers, clam chowder, rib eye, mashed potatoes, and real heavy stuff. I go with chicken and snacks at night like ice cream bars and cookies.”
However, the day of the game is a completely different story because after eating literally whatever can not be done on game day.
“Day of the game I am pretty clean with my green smoothie, water, and a lot of fruit to make myself really good.”

Who wouldn’t want to have at least one night a week to basically eat whatever they want because it was for their job?
Gameday Nerves?
In addition to keeping weight on there are other things to be concerned about heading into a game. One of those can be nerves. It also depends on the game time since the Pac-12 has so many 7 p.m. or late kicks allows for the entire day of waiting and waiting to get ready and just think about the game.
“For me, I get a little nervous the morning of the game. That is because I am nervous of something going off for my routine,” Kaufusi said. “I am kind of nervous, ‘I wake up, I gotta shower, I gotta get to this meeting at this time and be early.’ Once I get that out of the way then I did what I needed to do.”
Every player has some sort of nerves before a game and they aren’t due to not thinking they are not going to perform well but it is checking off the list like Kaufusi does each game day or it can be just some nervous excitement to get out of their system before they go out on the field and hit someone.
