Donovan Mitchell, Utah Jazz Will Reportedly Finalize Max Extension When Free Agency Begins
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah Jazz and star guard Donovan Mitchell will reportedly finalize a max contract extension when free agency begins.
Mitchell is coming off of a fantastic first round playoff series that ended in heartbreaking fashion. The Jazz star is eligible to sign a max extension that is worth approximately $170 million over five years.
NBA Insider Chris Haynes of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Mitchell will sign a max extension with the Jazz.
Utah was eliminated by the Nuggets in Game 7 on Tuesday. They held a 3-1 series lead before losing the last three games to the Nuggets. Mitchell had a tremendous series, averaging an NBA postseason best 36.3 points, 5 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game in the series, while shooting 52.5 percent from the field and 51.5 percent from the three-point line.
After trailing by as much as 19 points, Utah climbed back into the game and took a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter. With 15 seconds remaining in the game, Mitchell turned the ball over but on the fast break, Denver missed the open layup. The Jazz had no timeouts when they secured the rebound and with just four seconds on the clock, Mike Conley launched a three-pointer to potentially win the game but the ball went in and out of the rim.
Mitchell was clearly upset after losing the series, which ended the Jazz season.
Free agency is scheduled to begin around the middle of October.
