PROVO, Utah – Offensive lineman Clark Barrington is the latest transfer portal entry from the BYU football program.

The Athletic’s Max Olsen first reported the news. KSL Sports has since confirmed the report.

Barrington was always viewed as a player going through his final season at BYU in 2022. But the consensus view was that he was likely moving on to pursue an NFL career. Instead, he’s taking advantage of the extra year of college eligibility from the COVID-19 season in 2020.

Barrington issued a goodbye message on his personal Instagram page.

“Forever grateful for the memories, experiences, and relationships gained by playing for BYU. Thank you Cougar Nation,” wrote Barrington.

A member of Kalani Sitake’s first recruiting class in 2016, Barrington was part of the BYU football program for five seasons. He was a starter along the offensive line at guard for 40 games from 2019 to 2022.

Pro Football Focus noted that Barrington only gave up two sacks during his 40 career starts with the Cougars.

After the 2021 season, Barrington earned All-American honors from Pro Football Focus and the Action Network.

Clark Barrington could have a lot of interest in the Transfer Portal

The number of suitors for Barrington could be significant in the transfer portal. But one school to monitor could be BYU’s future Big 12 foe, the Baylor Bears. Barrington’s younger brother, Campbell, entered the transfer portal and committed to play for the Bears.

Former BYU offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes and offensive line coach Eric Mateos are on that staff. They both worked closely with Barrington.

Grimes was instrumental in developing Barrington after he lost 70 pounds while serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Uganda. Barrington’s first start came in the 2019 season in relief of an injured Tristen Hoge. He hasn’t looked back since.

Barrington is now the 10th BYU football player in the 2023 cycle to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal.
