Big Plays Set Up BYU’s First Touchdown Against Wyoming

PROVO, Utah – A couple of big plays helped BYU march down the field and set up a touchdown run by Christopher Brooks during the Cougars’ game against the Wyoming Cowboys.

The No. 19 Cougars hosted the Cowboys at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday, September 24.

Before BYU found its first points of the game, the Cougars punted on their first two possessions on offense. Following a Wyoming punt, BYU started a drive on its own 14-yard line.

On the first play of the series, BYU quarterback Jaren Hall unloaded a pass to Keanu Hill, who fought off defenders and ran down the field for a 47-yard gain.

Two plays later, Hall hit Isaac Rex for 32 yards down the far side of the field.

BYU’s next play came with 2:50 remaining in the opening quarter when Brooks burst up the middle and into the end zone for BYU’s first points of the game.

Brooks’ run gave BYU a 7-3 lead. It was Brooks’ third rushing touchdown this season.

The touchdown capped a four-play, 91-yard drive that took only 1:35 off the game clock.

After the touchdown, Hall was 4/5 passing for 84 yards. He also had three carries for 10 yards. The catches by Hill and Rex were their first touches of the game. Brooks’ score was his first rush.

BYU’s game against Wyoming is broadcast on ESPN2 and KSL NewsRadio.

Wyoming vs. BYU

It’s the first meeting between these two schools since the 2016 Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego. These two programs were once Mountain West and WAC rivals. They used to play on an annual basis, with the last regular season meeting taking place in 2010.

Outside of Utah and Utah State, BYU has never played a team more than Wyoming. BYU’s first win as a program came against Wyoming back in 1922. There’s a history between the two schools. Anyone around for those LaVell Edwards/Paul Roach games or the 1996 WAC Championship would tell you BYU/Wyoming used to be something back in the day.

Wyoming hasn’t won in Provo since 1987. BYU has won the last eight meetings in the series, with Wyoming’s last victory coming in 2003 against a BYU team that finished 4-8.
