SALT LAKE CITY – Arizona State announced that head football coach Herm Edwards has been fired following the Sun Devils’ 1-2 start to the season.

Arizona State vice president of university athletics Ray Anderson shared the news on Sunday, September 18.

The move arrived one day after the Sun Devils suffered a 30-21 loss at home to Eastern Michigan. Arizona State opened the season with a win vs. Northern Arizona and fell at Oklahoma State in Week 2.

“We have made the decision to make a change in the leadership of our football program, effective immediately,” Anderson shared in a statement. “Coach Edwards and I have determined that he will relinquish duties as our head coach. At the core of this is doing what is best for our current team, staff and university. I understand the frustrations out there. We must do better and that starts with our decision today.”

Edwards, 68, is a former NFL player and coach. During his playing career from 1977-86, Edwards played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Atlanta Falcons, and Los Angeles Rams. Following his playing career, the New Jersey native became a coach, first in college and then in the NFL in 1992. He became head coach of the New York Jets in 2001. Edwards coached the Jets until 2005. From 2006-08, he was the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. Edwards was out of coaching and worked in the media until getting the Arizona State job in 2018.

Arizona State’s football program is currently under investigation by the NCAA.

He had a 26-20 record, including 17-14 in Pac-12 Conference games, during his time with the Sun Devils. Edwards had a 1-2 record in bowl games with Arizona State.

Sun Devils running back coach Shaun Aguano will serve as interim head coach, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Arizona State’s next game is at home against the No. 13 Utah Utes on Saturday, September 24 at 8:30 p.m. (MDT). The game is slated to be televised on ESPN.
