SALT LAKE CITY – The Big Sky Conference named Weber State cornerback Desmond Williams as the league’s co-Defensive Player of the Week following his performance in Week 2.

The conference honored Williams on Monday, September 12.

Williams Helps Weber State Beat USU

Williams earned the recognition following his play in Weber State’s 35-7 upset of in-state foe USU. It was the program’s first win over an FBS program since 1993.

The Wildcat defensive back recorded six total tackles, five solo tackles, one pass breakup, one interception, and one touchdown in Weber State’s blowout victory. After intercepting an Aggie pass, Williams returned the ball 33 yards to the end zone for a Weber State touchdown.

Weber State out-gained the Aggies 163 yards to just 62 for Utah State in the opening quarter on their way to building a 13-7 lead.

The Wildcats took the second half kickoff with a chance to increase their lead but the Aggie defense was up to the challenge.

USU senior Hunter Reynolds forced the fifth turnover of the game when a Bronson Barron pass sailed over the head of his intended target and into the waiting arms of Reynolds.

The Aggies again couldn’t turn the INT into points, going three and out on the ensuing drive.

On the next possession, WSU put together their best drive of the season. An 18-play, 86-yard drive that resulted in a Barron touchdown pass to Ty MacPherson. The Wildcats rushed 15 times on the drive for 55 yards, draining more than nine minutes off of the clock. Weber State took advantage of a gassed Aggie defense following the touchdown, running untouched for the two-point conversion to make it 21-7.

Two plays into USU’s next drive and Williams put the nail in the Aggie coffin with a 33-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Weber State added a late touchdown when Barron connected with MacPherson for their second TD of the night.

This season, Williams has totaled 11 total tackles, eight solo tackles, one pass breakup, one interception, and one touchdown in two games.

The senior cornerback is in his third season with the Wildcats. Prior to joining Weber State ahead of the 2020 season, Williams played two seasons for the Boise State Broncos.

With the win over Utah State, Weber State improved to a 2-0 record this season. The Wildcats’ next game is at home against the Utah Tech Trailblazers on Saturday, September 17 at 6 p.m. (MDT).
