LOGAN, UT – The No. 16 Weber State Wildcats take their show on the road where they face an in-state rival in the Utah State Aggies.

The Aggies (1-1) host Weber State (1-0) at Maverik Stadium in Logan, UT on Saturday, September 10. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. (MST).

This will be the 16th matchup between the two programs separated by about 60 minutes of driving. Utah State has controlled the series, winning 14 of the first 15 games played between the two. Weber State is 1-9 in Logan and have lost the last eight games in the series. The Wildcats only win against USU came in 1978 in a 44-25 victory in Logan.

Utah State Aggies (1-1)

Utah State has had their share of ups and downs through two weeks.

A seasoning opening 31-20 win over UConn gave the Aggies plenty to build on but a 55-0 loss to No 1 Alabama last weekend showed that Utah State may not quite be on the level of the big boys in college football.

Head coach Blake Anderson acknowledged that starting quarterback Logan Bonner was ‘dinged up’ but he is expected to play against Weber State.

Through five quarters of play, Bonner is 23-for-38 for 320 yards and three scores.

Brian Cobbs, a wide receiver transfer from Maryland leads the Aggies with 10 catches for 141 yards and a touchdown. Justin McGriff and Kyle Van Leeuwen have also found the end zone this season.

Out of the backfield, Calvin Tyler Jr. has been the bell-cow back with 177 yards on 45 carries. Freshman Robert Briggs has added 113 yards on 20 carries with a touchdown against UConn.

Redshirt-freshman cornerback Ike Larsen has been a revelation for the Aggies as he has two interceptions and a blocked punt this season. Larsen earned Mountain West Freshman of the Week honors for his performance against the Crimson Tide.

Weber State Wildcats (1-0)

The Wildcats opened their 2022 campaign with a decisive 41-5 win over Western Oregon in week one.

After giving up an early safety, Weber State took control. WSU totaled 342 yards of offense while limiting Western Oregon to just 95 yards of offense. Western Oregon’s minus 34-yards rushing set a Weber State program record for the fewest rushing yards allowed in a single game.

Sophomore quarterback Bronson Barron finished with 152 yards and no touchdowns through the air on 16-for-28 passing.

The Wildcats focused on the rushing attack as five players finished with more than 20 yards on the ground. Josh Davis led the WSU attack with 56 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Damon Bankston and Steven Shoats-Thomas also added scores on the ground.

Junior cornerback Maxwell Anderson intercepted two passes.

Weber State is led by Jay Hill in his ninth season with the program. Hill is WSU’s all-time winningest coach with 58 career wins.

Program Connections

Weber State tight ends coach David Fiefia spent three seasons (2012-14) as an offensive graduate assistant at Utah State. Fiefia was a four-year letterman for the Aggies from 2000-03, earning first-team all-Sun Belt Conference honors in 2003 as an all-purpose player and second-team honors at running back.

WSU linebackers coach Matt Ah You spent one season at Utah State (2016) as a defensive graduate assistant. He also spent his senior season in 2010 at USU, but did not play due to injury.

Utah State senior OL Wade Meacham and Weber State junior TE Hayden Meacham are brothers.

Utah State redshirt freshman CB Ty Barnett began his collegiate career at Weber State.

With 34 in-state players on the Utah State roster and a whopping 52 players from Utah on Weber State’s roster, several players on both sides played with and against each other at the high school level across the Beehive State.
