In the first quarter, Weber State had their punt go into their own end zone for a safety. That didn’t waver the Wildcats when they needed just three plays to go 22 yards when Damon Bankston ran in a six-yard touchdown to give Weber State the lead.
After facing injuries last season, Josh Davis looked good in the first half, scoring a five-yard touchdown on a direct snap. Kris Jackson added to the running game success with a one-yard TD. Late in the second quarter, Kyle Thompson nailed a 24-yard field goal and the Wildcats went to the halftime break with a 24-2 lead.
Coming out of the break, Western Oregon made a 34-yard field goal to trim the deficit to 30-5 but that would be the last time the Wolves would score. Jackson added another one-yard touchdown later in the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, Thompson made a 39-yard field goal. Steven Shoats-Thomas ran in a 13-yard touchdown midway through the fourth to seal the win for the Wildcats.
Weber State improved their record to 1-0 on the season. They will be on the road to face Utah State on Saturday, September 10. Kickoff is at 5:00 p.m. MT on the Mountain West Network and on KSL Sports Zone.
