Salt Lake City- Isaac Rex, who suffered a gruesome in the USC game last year for the BYU football team, is further ahead than anyone expected. But he’s still working his way towards getting back to full strength.

“I trust it, it’s a growing experience, but I trust it about 80 percent,” said Isaac Rex.

Rex also noted he’s not able to jump off his injured ankle fully, but he did mention that running and cutting felt fine; he just struggled to jump off his right ankle early in camp.

“[Doctors] did say it will be about a year until the ankle is 100 percent,” said Rex.

Rex talked about his recovery, a long, drawn-out battle over the off-season.

“It was hours of rehab every day. I had doctors telling me it would be a year again before I was able to run,” said Rex.

The rehab was strenuous and involved Rex doing exercises such as picking up towels and marbles with his toes.

“It’s been a long process, but I’ve just got to thank all the physical therapists,” said Rex.

Rex’s return to the team has been controlled carefully by the coaching staff. Rex mentioned that on days when his ankle gets sore from work, coaches have been very lenient about missing practice time, with the objective being that Rex stays as healthy as possible.

Rex also noted that he’s good to go as long as he can tolerate the pain, so early in the year, a pitch count for the talented tight end could be in play.

Rex’s 2020 season before the injury saw him gather 40 catches and put up 429 receiving yards.

Rex is expected to be a key target this year for BYU quarterback Jaren Hall along with wide receivers Puka Nacua and Gunner Romney.

BYU believes this to be one of the best offensive groups they’ve put on the field over the past few years. Rex is a significant part of the equation. Things could get very interesting in Provo this year if Rex could emerge as the consistent red zone target he was during the 2020 season. But, of course, much of that depends on Rex’s injury and patience as he gets back to full speed.

BYU will open its season against the University of Southern Florida on September 3rd. The game will be played at 2 p.m. MT and can be seen on ESPNU and heard on KSL NewsRadio, with extended pregame coverage beginning at 10 a.m.
