DENVER- News out of Denver’s training camp Tuesday morning was that wide receiver Tim Patrick had to be carted off the field after making a spectacular catch.

Early reports indicate Patrick made a leaping catch during team drills, but came down wrong on his leg with it twisting. He stayed down on the field with teammates gathering around him till he was taken away.

A source earlier in the day indicated to KSL Sports things didn’t look good for Patrick. It has since been confirmed via MRI that Patrick will miss the 2022 football season with a torn ACL.

Patrick has been a bright spot on offense for the Broncos in recent years despite poor offensive production overall. Over the past two seasons Patrick has led Denver in touchdown catches with 11 total while also being reliable with contested catches. It appeared Patrick and new quarterback Russell Wilson were connecting well early on making Patrick’s loss a big one for the Broncos.

Tim Patrick, Ultimate Underdog

Patrick’s path to NFL stardom was an unlikely one. The former Ute via Grossmont College had to battle a series of obstacles through his college career including a different serious leg injury he sustained while Utah was hosting the Oregon Ducks in 2014. This was the same game former Duck tight end Pharaoh Brown also sustained a serious leg injury that almost led to amputation.

The 6’5″ receiver was never deterred by his challenges to get back on the field for the Utes and had a strong senior season in 2016 that was ultimately cut a little short due to some more minor injuries. While Patrick’s efforts weren’t enough to get him drafted in 2017, he did end up signing a free agent deal with the Baltimore Ravens shortly after the Draft ended. Patrick’s stint with the Ravens didn’t last long and he bounced to the 49ers briefly before finally finding a permanent home with the Broncos by the time the 2017 season rolled around.

Patrick really hit his groove in 2020 for Denver with an outstanding follow-up performance in 2021. In November of last year, Patrick signed a 3-year $34.5 million contract extension after proving to be invaluable to the organization.
