SALT LAKE CITY – The quest for $1 million for Jimmer Fredette and The Money Team has come to a close in The Basketball Tournament.

Boxer Floyd Mayweather’s team was bounced in the third round of TBT on Wednesday night to a roster of Dayton Flyers alumni called Red Scare.

The game took place on Dayton’s home floor in front of 2,619 Dayton fans. So it was a true road game environment for the one-seeded Money Team.

The Money Team lost to the Red Scare 83-81.

Former BYU star Jimmer Fredette, who came into the game averaging 25 points per contest through the first two games of the tournament, finished with 10 points. All 10 of Fredette’s points came from inside the arc. He was 0-for-5 from three-point range.

The Red Scare guard line of Darrell Davis and Scoochie Smith, both Dayton alums, hounded Fredette and fellow Money Team guard mate Jordan Crawford all night. When The Money Team was on the defensive end of the floor, the two Red Scare guards went at Fredette and Crawford on a regular basis.

Davis and Smith combined for 33 points.

The Money Team led through most of the first half, but the Red Scare closed the second quarter on an 11-2 run to take their first lead. Throughout the second half, the Red Scare kept holding off any potential run from TMT.

During the Elam Ending, which goes into effect at the first dead ball under four minutes remaining, the Red Scare held a 74-67 lead. With the Elam Ending the target score is eight more points than the leading team’s total. So the target for both teams to claim the victory was 82.

The Money Team made a run and even took an 81-80 lead, setting up a next bucket wins scenario.

On the defensive end, Fredette appeared to be getting pushed off by Davis. To the point where ESPN analyst Dan Dakich was even calling it from his broadcaster perch. Fredette responded to the physical play from Davis with a physical reach-in, to which the refs called a foul.

Davis went to the line and knocked down his one free throw tying up the game at 81 each.

The Red Scare maintained possession and they used their size to get into the paint for a Josh Cunningham layup to earn the 83-81 win.
