SALT LAKE CITY, UT - DECEMBER 8: Head coach Ryan Odom of the Utah State Aggies directs his team during the second half against the BYU Cougars December 8, 2021 at the J. Willard Marriott Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

LOGAN, Utah – The Diamond Head Classic announced on Tuesday that Utah State basketball will open the tournament against Seattle University on December 22.

Utah State and Seattle will tip-off on Thursday, December 22 at approximately 3 p.m. MT in the Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sherriff Center In Honolulu, Hawai’i.

The Aggies will face the winner/loser of the Iona/SMU game on Friday, December 23. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, December 25.

Iona/SMU and Utah State/Seattle are the first two games to begin the Diamond Head Classic. George Washington will face Washington State in the third game of the quadruple header followed by Pepperdine and host Hawai’i.

Seattle finished tied for the first in the WAC last season with a record of 23-9 overall and 14-4 in conference play. Utah State ended the 2021-22 campaign with an 18-16 overall record and 8-10 in Mountain West Conference play.

The Aggies participated in the Myrtle Beach Invitational last season in their MTE (multi-team event). They beat Penn in double overtime and knocked off New Mexico State to finish the event with a 2-0 record.

Utah State will be without two of its key players due to leaving for the NBA and retiring. Justin Bean led the team in scoring (17.4) and rebounding (9.9) last season. He decided to declare for the NBA Draft and signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Bean will look to crack the roster for the Clippers, a team that finished the 2021-22 season with a 42-40 record and ninth place in the Western Conference. They lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves and the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA Play-In Tournament.

Brock Miller decided to retire from basketball after five seasons with Utah State. Miller appeared in 18 games last season, including 14 starts, averaging 6.8 points per game on 31% shooting from the three-point line.
