SALT LAKE CITY – Board of Governors Chair John J. DeGioia of the NCAA announced by mutual agreement with the board that president Mark Emmert will step down.

Mark Emmert will continue to serve in his role with the NCAA until a new president is selected and in place or until June 30, 2023.

“Throughout my tenure I’ve emphasized the need to focus on the experience and priorities of student-athletes,” said Emmert.  “I am extremely proud of the work of the Association over the last 12 years and especially pleased with the hard work and dedication of the national office staff here in Indianapolis.”

Emmert was named president of the NCAA on April 27, 2010 and assumed his duties on November 1, 2010.

“With the significant transitions underway within college sports, the timing of this decision provides the Association with consistent leadership during the coming months plus the opportunity to consider what will be the future role of the president,” said DeGioia. “It also allows for the selection and recruitment of the next president without disruption.”

Before serving as president of the NCAA, Emmert served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Montana State University from 1991-95. He then joined the University of Connecticut as provost and later promoted to chancellor of academic affairs. Emmert moved to LSU as the chancellor in 1999, where he was a part of the hiring of Nick Saban as their head coach in 1999.

Emmert became the president of the University of Washington from 2004-10 when he made the move to the NCAA office.
