PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball forwards Caleb Lohner and Gideon George are going to enter the NCAA’s Transfer Portal.

Both have submitted their paperwork and will be in the portal within the next 48 hours. The news was reported by KSL Sports’ Zone Sports Network producer Jake Hatch.

The news of Caleb Lohner entering the Transfer Portal comes on the heels of BYU assistant Chris Burgess taking an assistant role at the University of Utah. Burgess worked in the frontcourt with Lohner the past two seasons.

Caleb Lohner has played two seasons at BYU

A native of Dallas, Texas, who concluded his prep career at Wasatch Academy, Lohner initially signed a letter of intent with the University of Utah. However, he got out of his LOI to later sign with BYU.

It wouldn’t be unreasonable to think Utah could be a potential landing spot for Lohner now that Burgess is heading up to the Hill.

Over the past two seasons, Lohner averaged 7 points per game and was an elite rebounder for BYU, averaging 6.8 boards in his first two seasons. Coming into his sophomore season, Lohner was tabbed as a preseason All-WCC performer. Unfortunately, he didn’t live up to those expectations as he experienced struggles with his game on the offensive end.

The struggles led to Lohner going to the bench for four games before returning to the starting lineup. He experienced a revival in his play on the offensive end during BYU’s NIT run to the Quarterfinals, headlined by a 20-point performance against Long Beach State.

Gideon George snapshot

Like Lohner, George also experienced success in the NIT postseason run for BYU. The former JUCO prospect scored a career-high 27 points against Northern Iowa.

BYU coach Mark Pope pointed to Gideon George and Caleb Lohner as “big chunks” of “BYU basketball future during the NIT run.”

Along with entering the NCAA Transfer Portal, George has submitted his name for the NBA Draft pool of prospects. He has one year of college eligibility remaining. George started in 27 games the past two seasons for BYU.

Lohner has three years of college eligibility remaining since his first year as a freshman came during the free season of eligibility amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
