SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former BYU and current Detroit Lions running back Jamaal Williams jokingly compared his former team to an ex-girlfriend.

Williams is in his first season with the Lions.

The Cougars’ all-time leading rusher played the first four seasons with the Green Bay Packers, who opted to not re-sign Williams in free agency this past offseason.

“They didn’t want me like that ex-girlfriend, shoot, I got to go,” Williams jokingly remarked. “Good thing I got a rebound. It was the Lions. They picked me up, you know what I mean. Now they feeding me good. Taking me to dinners, you know what I mean. Another man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

The seemingly always happy Williams is clearly taking a glass half-full approach to his departure from the team that drafted him.

“I’m just having fun, man. It’s part of life. You know, you’re going to have those type of rejections,” Williams continued. “You’re going to get turned down. You’re going to get, you know, people ain’t going to want you, but when you get your shot and opportunity again from somebody who will give you your shot, you know you just got to take that opportunity, be grateful for it and make it count.”

About Jamaal Williams

Before turning professional, Williams was a standout player at BYU from 2012-16.

Williams was selected by the Packers during the fourth round with the 134th overall pick in 2017 NFL Draft.

During his four years with Green Bay, the former BYU star ran for 1,985 yards and 10 touchdowns on 500 carries. Williams also had 122 receptions for 961 yards and eight touchdowns.

The former BYU star was in the starting lineup for Detroit’s season-opener against the San Francisco 49ers. Williams finished the game with nine carries for a team-high 54 yards and a touchdown. He also had eight catches for 56 yards out of the backfield.

The Lions’ next game is against Williams’ former team, the Packers, on Monday, September 20 at 6:15 p.m. (MDT). The game will broadcast on ESPN.
