WCC Releases Statement On BYU Joining Big 12

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – With the news of BYU joining the Big 12 Conference, the WCC, BYU’s current athletic conference (minus football), released a statement Friday morning.
BYU Football is independent while other sports are members of the WCC until the 2022-2023 academic year. The BYU Cougars joined the WCC in 2011.
“We understand BYU’s decision and wish everyone connected with the institution the very best moving forward. BYU has been transparent in exploring opportunities to find league affiliation for its football program and has been presented with an opportunity that fits its needs well,” the statement began.

The official news of BYU joining the Big 12 dropped early Friday morning, though it was expected all week.
“The WCC has enjoyed unprecedented success in recent years with multiple NCAA championships, and BYU has been a great part of those achievements,” the statement continued.
BYU joins Cincinnati, Houston and UCF in joining the Big 12.
The Big 12 Conference currently consists of 10 teams, but two of the members –Texas and Oklahoma– are on their way out in 2025 when they go to the SEC.
