SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Tony Finau finished his first round at the Memorial Tournament at even-par, 72, and six shots off the pace entering the second round.
Finau’s opening round consisted of 2 birdies, 1 eagle, 4 bogeys, and 11 pars.

His opening bogey came on the second hole to immediately push him to one-over-par. But back-to-back birdies on seven and eight had him making the turn in red figures.
Finau then looked to be making his move when he eagled the par 5 11th after he chipped in from 115 yards. But as Finau has so often done, he followed up his eagle with a bogey on the par 3 12th after missing the green long.
Then disaster struck when he made back-to-back bogeys on 17 and 18. He entered the clubhouse an unhappy man.
Round 1 Stats
Finau’s round was all over the place. He only hit 27% of fairways, 44% of greens in regulation but averaged just 1.5 putts per green. Despite not hitting many fairways, Finau still averaged 300 yards off the tee with his longest tee shot clocking in at 326 yards.

It was a scrappy round of golf for Finau who is fortunate to enter Friday at just one-over-par. But if he is going to contend this week, he must be a better job of finding fairways and greens in regulation.
He sits six shots behind the current leader Collin Morikawa.
Friday’s round will begin off the 10th tee at 10:56 a.m. and will play alongside Jimmy Walker again who ended the opening round at two-over-par. Matt Kuchar did tee off the first tee with Finau and Walker but withdrew with a forearm injury midway through the opening round.
