SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former University of Utah guard Alfonso Plummer announced that he will be transfer to Illinois to play for the Fighting Illini.

Alfonso Plummer spent two seasons with Utah and will now spend his final season of college basketball with Illinois. The former Runnin’ Utes sharpshooter announced his decision on social media on Saturday morning.

“Illini NATION!!!! LET’S DANCE!!!!” Plummer tweeted.

Alfonso Plummer’s Time In Utah

During the 2021 season, Plummer averaged 13.6 points per game and posted a field goal percentage of 44.1. He averaged 28.2 minutes per game. The Puerto Rican guard had a massive end to the 2019-20 season when he scored in bunches at the end of the year. In the 2020 Pac-12 Tournament, Plummer made a conference tournament record 11 three-pointers in their loss to Oregon State.

Before committing to the Illini, Plummer decided to enter the transfer portal and Larry Krystkowiak was fired after 10 seasons as the head coach and Craig Smith was hired as his replacement. He joined Utah as a junior college transfer and didn’t see much playing time in his first season until the end. Krystkowiak mentioned that he didn’t standout in practice but came on strong when the bright lights turned on.

On April 15, Plummer announced he would return to college and not test the NBA Draft waters. He put Illinois, Florida, Georgia Texas Tech and BYU in his top five and decided to head to Illinois. Plummer will need to battle for minutes as guard Trent Frazier announced he will be returning to the team. The Illini finished the 2020-21 season with a 24-7 overall record and 16-4 mark in the Big Ten. They beat Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament Championship game. After receiving a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, Illinois beat Drexel in the first round before losing to Loyola Chicago in the second round.

For Utah, Craig Smith has found some backcourt players in the transfer portal to replace Plummer and Ian Martinez. He recently received commitments from Cincinnati freshman Gabe Madsen, UNLV veteran David Jenkins and former Utah State guard Rollie Worster.
