SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Weber State trailed by 16 points with 6:04 left and they were able to get within one but they eventually fell to Montana 80-75.

Weber State had a first round bye in the Big Sky Tournament as Montana pulled off the upset.

Seikou Sisoho Jawara and Cody Carlson led Weber State with 18 points apiece. Dillon Jones added 13 points and 6 rebounds.

Robby Beasley led the Grizzlies with 23 points.

The first half was even as the teams were tied at 34 at the break. The second half was a different story as the Grizzlies jumped out to a double digit lead, outscoring the Wildcats 31-15 and had a 16-point lead with under 5 minutes left. Weber State kept chipping at the lead and pulled to within 12 before Montana scored a layup.

Montana hit a three to go up by 13 before Weber answered with a three of their own right away. The Grizzlies had a 72-62 lead with 2:37 left in the game. After knocking down free throws, Weber State fouled Montana and the Grizzlies missed the front end of the one-and-one. Right after the rebound, the Wildcats quickly ran down the floor and knocked down a three-pointer. They trailed Montana 73-67 with 2:11 left in the game.

As the Wildcats put on their full court press, the Grizzlies were able to get down the floor and ended with a layup and the fall. Fortunately, for Weber State, Montana missed the free throw and Sisoho Jawara made a three to cut the lead to five points. Then the Wildcats stole the inbounds pass and missed the three-pointer to potentially cut the lead to two points.

Zahir Porter was assessed a technical foul which led to two free throws made by Montana. Down by four points, Weber missed a three, got the offensive rebound and Sisoho Jawara hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one with 17 seconds left.

On the inbounds pass for Montana, one official called a five second violation but the another official granted Montana their last timeout. When the Grizzlies went to the foul line, they made both free throws to extend the lead to three. Weber State had their three-point attempt blocked and it went out of bounds off the Wildcats. After further review from the officials, it remained with Montana.

Montana knocked down free throws to seal the win.

Weber State’s season ended with a 17-6 overall record and 12-4 in Big Sky play.
