College Sports, High School Championships Unaffected By Governor’s COVID-19 Mandates

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah Governor Gary Herbert issued a statewide mandate that has impacted sports.

On Sunday evening, Governor Herbert issued the following regarding sports.

• No youth/high school sports and activities
• Weekly testing on college campuses

The statewide mandates does not impact the High School Championships and college sports around the state of Utah.

We are postponing for the next two weeks all sports and after-school activities with the exception of high school playoff and championship games and also intercollegiate sports.

Utah moved their Friday football game against UCLA to Saturday night to allow the Utes one more day to get players tested for COVID-19. BYU is off until Nov. 21 and Utah State will host Fresno State on Saturday.

For High School sports, football will be holding their state championship and semifinal matchups this weekend and next weekend.

Governor Herbert also issued other mandates as follows:

• Statewide mask mandate
• Gatherings limited to same household only
• Masks and physical distancing between household groups at all businesses, including bars and restaurants

This will be effective beginning Nov. 9 to Nov. 23.

State Epidemiologist Dr. Angela Dunn tweeted her support for the mandate.
