Utah Royals Coach, General Manager Supports Players In Racial, Gender Equality Following Club Scandals

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Craig Harrington and Stephanie Lee has expressed their support of the Utah Royals players regarding racial and gender equality, following reports that racism and sexism exist within the club’s leadership.
“It has been an honor to watch the Utah Royals players raising their voices for racial and gender equality,” Harrington said via a statement on Twitter.

“I commend their bravery in moving our society to become more just and equitable. There is no place for racism or sexism in sports or in society. Whether on the field or off, as their coach and ally, I am proud to support them in this fight,” Harrington added.

“The racism, sexism, disrespect and discrimination that was reported about our organization’s leadership has been horrific. Nothing that was alleged is excusable or acceptable. None of it,” Lee said.
“We were supposed to be better, we were supposed to be making a difference,” Lee continued. “I am in awe of the Royals athletes. They have showed up every day through this – to work, to get better, to play the game they love, and to ask for true inclusivity and positive change.”
Club Scandals
Late last week, Utah Royals owner Dell Loy Hansen was accused of using racial slurs on a number of different occasions over the years. MLS quickly responded with news that the league is “immediately commencing an investigation.”
Shortly thereafter, Royals Chief Business Official Andy Caroll was alleged to have acted in a sexist way according to a report. The club reported that Carroll will be taking a leave of absence effective immediately.
Fall Series
Utah Royals are preparing for what the NWSL is calling their Fall Series. The Royals will play four matches against Portland Thorns and OL Reign beginning with an away trip to Portland on September 20 and concluding with an away trip to Cheney Stadium against OL Reign on October 17.
