SEATTLE, Wash. – The Mariners have added another arm to the fray, claiming right-handed pitcher Brady Lail from the Chicago White Sox on Monday.

To make room for Lail on the 40-man roster, Seattle has designated infielder Patrick Wisdom for assignment. The Mariners now have seven days to trade, release or outright Wisdom’s contract to the team’s alternate training site.

Lail, whose 27th birthday was Sunday, has appeared in two MLB games, one last season with the Yankees and one last week while with the White Sox. Between those two MLB appearances, Lail threw four innings and allowed three runs on four hits. The White Sox designated Lail for assignment this weekend shortly after his lone appearance for the team.

Last season, Lail was with the Yankees, who drafted him in the 18th round of the 2012 MLB Draft out of high school. In 2019, Lail pitched in 26 games (one start), across three minor league levels, starting in High-A and ending the season in Triple-A. He posted a 4-2 record with one save and a 3.83 ERA in 49 1/3 innings. He had 67 strikeouts and 15 walks. In eight minor league seasons, Lail has a 51-33 record, 3.97 ERA and 575 strikeouts to 218 walks in 741 career minor league innings. He signed with the White Sox this last offseason as a free agent.

Lail was a pitcher and a quarterback at Bingham High School, he finished with a 9-3 baseball record as a senior. Before getting drafted, Lail was committed to play at Arizona.

Wisdom, 28, has been at the Mariners’ alternate training site for all of 2020. He signed with Seattle this offseason.

A first-round pick by the Cardinals in 2012, Wisdom spent most of 2019 with the Texas Rangers’ Triple-A team, where he hit 31 home runs and drove in 74 runs in 107 games with a .240 batting average. He played all over for Triple-A Nashville, playing first base, third base and all three outfield spots. He appeared in nine games for he Rangers last year, hitting .154 with one run, one double, one RBI and one walk. He made his MLB debut in 2018 with the Cardinals, who traded him to Texas before the 2019 season.

Wisdom was competing for a utility spot on the Mariners’ roster. The Mariners have used Dylan Moore, Tim Lopes, Dee Gordon and José Marmolejos as utility players this season.
