SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – According to It’s Utah’s World podcast co-host and 247 Sports reporter Steve Bartle, University of Utah basketball incoming freshman Caleb Lohner has asked for his release from his letter of intent.
Lohner signed his letter of intent to play basketball at Utah on November 13, 2019. The four-star recruit played at Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah. He was the 20th ranked small forward in the country and the second best player in the state of Utah, according to 247.
According to Bartle and 247 Sports, Lohner wants to be released from his letter of intent at Utah so that he can go play for Mark Pope and BYU basketball.

It is unclear if Krystkowiak will release him from his letter of intent. If Krystkowiak doesn’t then Lohner can enter the transfer portal when school starts in the fall and then apply for a waiver from the NCAA.
Lohner has family ties to the BYU basketball program with his father playing for the Cougars. Bartle has also reported that Lohner’s father recently accepted a job on BYU campus and since that hiring took place, Pope and his staff have been in communication.

If Lohner leaves Utah, this would be a big blow for the Utes as Lohner’s ability to score while being a versatile forward was going to have an immediate impact for the Runnin’ Utes this upcoming season.
Utah has already lost two players to the transfer portal in center Matt Van Komen and guard Both Gach.
