SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – ESPN released teasers for a piece of their docuseries, E60, that follows former Utah quarterback Alex Smith’s recovery from a gruesome injury.

In November of 2018, Smith suffered a compound fracture in his leg while playing for the Washington Redskins.

Following the injury, he was faced with major infections that led to him getting sepsis. He was faced with the possibility of an amputation.

In a recent interview, Smith said he was “very much lucky to be alive, and very much lucky to still have his leg.”

“From what I understand this has never happened to a professional athlete,” Smith voiced in the trailer. “My future, nobody knows it.”

It seemed unlikely, and nearly impossible that Smith would play in the NFL again, but now he is eyeing a comeback as soon as 2020.

“All of a sudden to go from, ‘they’re going to fix this’ to maybe cutting off your leg is the best thing,” Smith narrated. “Football may not be out of the question. Can I push it this far? Can I go play quarterback again?”

The piece will air in April, according to ESPN.

Smith played college football at the University of Utah where he finished fourth in the Heisman voting in 2004. He posted a 21-1 record as a college starter. Ute fans remember him fondly as the man who led them to a Fiesta Bowl victory.

During his time in NFL, he has played for the San Fransisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs and the Washington Redskins.
