SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Nobody knows when it will happen, however those in the Britain Covey circle know that one day he will be known as Coach Covey.

Following the loss to the USC Trojans, Kyle Whittingham announced there was a good chance Covey would redshirt the remainder of the year, following knee soreness in the same knee that he tore his ACL during the 2018 Pac-12 Championship game. However, at the time, Whittingham would not give much away.

Fast forward two months, Utah has clinched the Pac-12 South, they are a top-five team in the country, and are preparing to take on a two-loss Oregon Ducks outfit in the Pac-12 decider and Whittingham confirmed Covey will redshirt the 2019-20 season no matter where or what happens to the Utes going forward.

As we look towards the 2020 season, Covey will be a redshirt junior. He will have two years of eligibility left, despite playing as a freshman in 2015 (remember age is just a number, Cov).

Coach In Waiting

Covey has openly expressed his interest in getting into coaching and has spoken to both the media and Whittingham, behind closed doors, about his desire.

Since his fourth and final game of 2019, Covey has been spending home games in the coaching booth with offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig. During the week, when Covey is not focusing on his scout team duties, he can be found in the film room trying to develop schemes and plays that he thinks would work against whomever the Utes are playing next.

As a former teammate of Covey, his positive, upbeat and energetic demeanor is what makes him so lovable. He always has a smile on his face and is constantly trying to push his peers to be bigger and better.

For example, prior to the final regular-season game against the Colorado Buffaloes, I bumped into Covey on the sideline.

“Hey!” he shouted. “I want you to know, that this summer I am going to bring my A-game on the golf course. My body will be 100 percent and you will not stand a chance against me,” he continued.

This past summer Covey and I played a round of golf with each other. It was entertaining, to say the least. However, I ended up beating him and apparently he still holds a grudge with me.

Regardless, his competitive nature and desire to win, no matter what he is trying to achieve, will take him to the places that he wants to go.

Whenever Covey decides to exchange his cleats for a whistle, success awaits. His brilliant mind, matched with his lovable charisma has him destined to make headway in the coaching world.
