SANDY, Utah – LAFC’s Lee Nguyen put his team up 2-0 on Real Salt Lake with a strong finish in the 64th minute.
Nguyen doubled LAFC’s lead with a hard, low shot that beat RSL’s Nick Rimando after a slick pass gave him a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper.
LAFC’s first goal came in the eighth minute thanks to its leading goal scorer, Carlos Vela.
Rimando had been playing well earlier in the match and made a couple of nice saves to keep RSL close in the U.S. Open Cup match.
Just before Nguyen’s goal, RSL’s Tate Schmitt nearly knotted the game up with a backdoor shot on goal but LAFC’s Pablo Sisniega was able to make a nice kick save to prevent the ball from entering the net.

The U.S. Open Cup match has no effect on the MLS standings, which is led by LAFC by a sizable margin.
RSL took the pitch without the guidance of head coach Mike Petke, who was away from the team receiving a coaching certificate in Minnesota.
The home team was also without the services of usual starters Albert Rusnak and Jefferson Savarino, who are both away on international duty.
