SANDY, Utah – It didn’t take long for the best team in Major League Soccer to put up the first goal against Real Salt Lake.
Facing LAFC in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup, a game that does not count in the MLS standings, RSL surrendered a goal in the eighth minute by Carlos Vela, who leads MLS in scoring.
Vela took a long pass that came from the center of the pitch, took a few dribbles down the right side and fired a shot that RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando couldn’t reach the ball on a diving attempt at a save.

RSL took the pitch without the guidance of head coach Mike Petke, who was away from the team receiving a coaching certificate in Minnesota.
The home team was also without the services of usual starters Albert Rusnak and Jefferson Savarino, who are both away on international duty.
